The Milkyway Galaxy

The Milkyway Galaxy
By - Vaidehi Patel

Hi friends,

My name is Vaidehi Patel. This my sixth Blog Writing. My today's topic related to Science : The Milkyway Galaxy. It's the Galaxy we all live!.So, let's move on.....

  1.  What is meant by a Galaxy ?
  • A galaxy is a collection of stars and planets that are held together by gravity.
  • In a galaxy, the celestial bodies rotate around a central object.
  • A galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust, and billions of stars and their solar systems, all held together by gravity.

       2. When was our galaxy called the MilkyWay ?

  • Long ago, the Romans named the galaxy “Via Lactea,” which translates to “Road Of Milk.” The Romans named it Via Lactea precisely because it looks like a milky patch of sky above the Earth at night. But, the Romans weren't the first to name the galaxy.

         3. Is Galaxy and MilkyWay the same ?

  • Galaxy                                                               Great Sky River
     Local Galaxy

                                                     Milkyway Galaxy
    Silvery River

            4. What is the meaning of Milkyway?
  • The Milky Way is the galaxy that contains our Solar System, with the name describing the galaxy's appearance from Earth: a hazy band of light seen in the night sky formed from stars that cannot be individually distinguished by the naked eye.
             5. What is the largest galaxy in the universe than the Milkyway ?

  • IC 1101
  • The biggest known galaxy is IC 1101, which is 50 times the Milkyway's size and about 2,000 times more massive. It is about 5.5 million light-years across. Nebulas, or vast clouds of gas, also have impressively large sizes.

              6.  Can Milkyway galaxy be seen from Earth ?

  • The Milkyway is visible from Earth as a hazy band of white light, some 30° wide, arching across the night sky. In night sky observing, although all the individual naked-eye stars in the entire sky are part of the Milkyway Galaxy, the term "Milkyway" is limited to this band of light.

              7. Why can't the shape of the Milkyway be seen from Earth ?

  • We are basically in the middle of our galaxy 'Milkyway'. A thing can't be seen from inside as it could be seen from outside. So,as we are in the middle of the galaxy so we can't see its spiraling shape.

               8. Can we see anything outside the Milky Way?
  •  The answer is no – unless you count seeing the combined light of many billions of stars. From the Northern Hemisphere, the only galaxy outside our Milky Way that's easily visible to the eye is the great galaxy in the constellation Andromeda, also known as M31. ... This is the edgewise view into our own Milky Way galaxy.
 (etc.)

How Does The Milkyway Galaxy Look Like ?
